Heroic Pizza

Another tradition, which I personally crave when Thanksgiving leftovers beckon, is Turkey, Cranberry and Brie Pizza. Our recipe makes two crusts.

 

 

 

 

 

 

MP creates one pizza

 

 

 

 

 

 

and I doll up another -- a coating of toasted sesame oil and a heavy grating of fresh ginger.  Cubes of turkey meat scattered atop; loving spoonfuls’ of the Orange Cranberry Sauce nestles in between and crowned with slices of –Double Cream Brie. Uh-huh.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

No match with the wood-fired crust that delivers the thin charred bits from my brother and Cynthia’s  Montana pizza oven, but…

 

 

 

 

 

 

Everything that is holy about bread: roasted bits of turkey, hints of umami hiding among sweet and tangy cranberries are present and accounted for in one spot on slice.

Yesterday was Thanksgiving, but it was also Britton’s birthday—we did the math and realized we first met Britton 21 years ago at Malarky’s (Ty’s surprise 21st party).  Thursday we celebrated with too much food and overflowing love for who Britton is and the incomparable gift she is to all of us.

More Than a Day

Handmade place cards for Thanksgiving are among reflective treasures zipped up in a crumpled plastic bag in our sideboard.

Drawn on folded index cards by tiny hands gripping crayons and markers, each of my boys' designed wistful drawings celebrating the meal and capturing (sometimes hysterical) traits and perceived passions’ on each artifact--

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Izzy carries on a decades-old tradition perched over our well-worn countertop, lost in font styles and whimsy.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This year our family will be smaller in numbers...

 

 

 

 

 

 

with a special guest too.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Meanwhile, I quietly gather together thoughts and memories of long ago feasts polished by gratitude and grace.

Cranberry Round-up

Cranberries appear now heralding the weeks before our families and friends gather around tables topped with polished heirloom silverware and maybe even Grandma’s china. If you have been riding along with me for the last few years—you may see a pattern.  Desserts are one of my forever-favorite additions to bake and photograph for this space.  Cranberry Apple Crisp is truly at the top of the float because it pulls together autumn apples and cranberry gems; finished with toasty crumbles of walnuts and golden buttery oats. Simple to make—it takes only one bowl--.  Add it to your holiday repertoire along with these three other cranberry condiments from my kitchen.
