Pass the Ranch, Please

I quit buying bottled salad dressings in 1996.  I am especially proud of that.  Vinaigrette’s from lemon, blood oranges, and vinegars abound; but Ranch dressing is universally adored.  Especially for children who say, yes to eating vegetables if the creamy stuff is at hand.

It may not be the healthiest choice but make your own, control the sodium, serve it once in awhile.  The children in your life will love it! Here is my recipe with a secret ingredient too.  The instant dry milk powder naturally thickens the dressing and gives it longevity.

Bring on summertime and family dinners on the patio!

House Ranch Dressing

  • ¾ cup mayonnaise (6 ounces)
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 2 Tablespoons instant dry milk powder
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 Tablespoons fresh chopped dill or ½ teaspoon dried dill weed (to taste)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar (to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

  1. Whisk mayonnaise, buttermilk and dry milk powder in a small bowl. Mix in remaining ingredients. Adjust to taste and chill.
  2. Makes about 1½ cups.

Ranch is delicious! I have been wanting to experiment with a greek yogurt ranch dip/dressing. Have you explored this as a healthier alternative?

I have tried the light mayo and 2% Greek yogurt in place of the mayo too…this is just for special occasions (like Izzy’s 10th birthday)!
      How can that be?
