Somewhere in Heaven

This morning the City of Newport Beach will honor

our family and the memory of our son, Gray.

Each year the Gray Lunde Ironman attracts the most dedicated Junior Lifeguards.  At 8am they gather at the Santa Ana River Jetty, Tower 74 for a grueling

run, swim, run.

Participants will run to the Newport Pier (2.2miles), swim around Buddy’s Buoy twice (400m), run to the Balboa Pier (1.7 miles), swim around Renee’s Buoy twice (400m), run to “G” Street, and back to the finish at the Balboa Pier for recognition.

The very youngest athlete is 9 years old.

The event is 29 this year.

When Gray was 8 years old he and I ran together so we could keep track of his brothers,

Ty and Cole.

As a JG the following year he became the king of the Ironman in his age division

--year after year.

The event became the Gray Lunde Ironman.

Somewhere in heaven a champion gives purpose to each barefoot step I take in the soft sand

—year after year.

See you at the River Jetty!

"Thy way, not mine, O Lord,
However dark it be;
O lead me by thine own right hand,
Choose out the path for me."

"Smooth let it be or rough,
It will be still the best;
Winding or straight, it matters not,
It leads me to thy rest."
